What will we do?
The Systems/Layers booklet is a guide but we can vary it a bit...
Before the event
Registration is at http://sdleeds-nov-2011.eventbrite.co.uk. The walkshop is now fully booked, although there are still places available for Service Design Drinks. If you signed up but find you cannot attend the walkshop, please let us know as soon as possible so someone else can take your place.
We will provide
- maps for participants showing the area, marked with start and end points, but lots of space for participants to scribble on and record their observations
- a few prompts and questions of things to look out for
- phone numbers and the #walkshop hastag to keep in touch during the event
- tea/coffee in the meeting room straight after the walk
- big print out map, Postits and marker pens to aid ths discussion
On the day
Participants should...
- wrap up warm and if necessary waterproof - check the weather forecast
- bring anything they'll use to record their walkshop findings
- pencil and paper
- camera (with flash)
- smartphone for recording sounds, pictures, video, detecting wifi
Sunset – 3:52pm – Gather at start point (Leeds City Museum front steps) for approx 15 mins of briefing and discussion. Agree the territory, aims and protocols of walkshop and if necessary split into groups.
4:15pm - 5:15pm – Walk the territory looking for places, activities and tangible evidence of the networked world touching physical space – for example we might notice how people do or do not interact with the BBC big screen, or how German market holders in wooden huts take credit card payments. We might notice CCTV cameras and wonder who and where, if anyone anywhere, is watching them. I’d expect some people to take notes, some to take photos, and some interesting discussions to break out as we walk.
5:15pm – to the Leonardo Building for coffee. First 15 mins downloading info, warming up and getting ready for discussion.
discuss our findings and questions:
- What did we notice for the first time today?
- What do we think of walkshopping as a service design technique?
- How could service design make a positive difference to the place and activities we’ve observed?
6:30pm onwards – event dissolves into Service Design Drinks, being joined by people who did not take part in the walkshop.
After the event
I would not be prescriptive about the outputs but hope that people will upload photos to Flickr and tweet their thoughts using the #walkshop hashtag. Also subsequently there may be blog posts or ideas taken forward for other forums.

Lovely. I reckon the Millennium Square webcam would be both a tool and a subject for the walkshop, proving that you can't observe without changing the outcome.
